Master’s Update – w/c Monday 4th May
The Educators’ Military Lecture – Wednesday 6 May
A fascinating talk on ‘War in the 21st Century’, given by General Sir Richard Barrons KCB CBE and hosted by The Worshipful Company of Educators at Bakers’ Hall on 5 May. A very compelling, unique and thought-provoking insight on the threats to the UK, current political and defence issues and how the private sector has a role to play in contributing to our defence. The presentation and Q&A lasted 1.5 hours after which a most enjoyable Reception was held. Whittington Course – Friday 8 May
The Whittington Course, which began in 2002, is an annual event where the Company host students from the Harris Garrard Academy (HGA) to a day in the City of London. This experience gives them an opportunity to learn what the City does and exposes them to potential careers in sectors such as Banking, Security and the Police. The day began at One Canada Square (Canary Wharf) with a talk on a career in physical security, followed by a presentation from a former HGA student who is now a Freeman of the Company. We were honoured to receive the Lady Mayor, Dame Susan Langley DBE, and Mayoral Consort, Mr Gary Langley, for a talk and Q&A, before walking to Barclays for a presentation and inter-active workshops on CV writing and interviewing. A hearty lunch in their café was enjoyed by all and then a tube journey for a short visit to the Sky Garden in the City. A walk to Saddlers’ Hall followed for a presentation by the City of London Police. At the end of the day the students were driven in black taxis to Bankside Pier, courtesy of The Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers. A full-on and fascinating day and I am confident that the HGA students went away having experienced and learnt so much. We are truly grateful to those who arranged the Programme and to those who contributed throughout. The Whittington Course is an outstanding annual event which gives young people unique experiences – and inspires and motivates them to think about careers beyond their current expectations.
