The Whittington Course 2025 – An Insight to The City
The Whittington Course 2025 took place on Friday, 9th May, continuing the tradition of providing students from Harris Garrard Academy with valuable insights into the City of London’s financial and business landscape. Named after the legendary Lord Mayor who found his fortune in our great City, this programme aims to broaden horizons and showcase the diverse career opportunities available to young people.
The first destination was Northern Trust, where students enjoyed a hearty breakfast before listening attentively to presentations about various financial careers in banking. Particular focus was given to sectors such as cybersecurity, auditing, and graduate schemes. The students demonstrated exceptional engagement, extending the question and answer session as they sought to learn more about the diverse pathways available within the financial industry.
From Northern Trust, the group proceeded to Barclays, where they participated in a comprehensive CV workshop. The session focused on practical skills vital for entering the workforce – crafting effective CVs, preparing for interviews, and understanding what employers seek beyond academic qualifications. Students paired up to role-play both interviewer and candidate, gaining valuable experience in presenting themselves professionally.
A highlight at Barclays was a tour of a working floor, giving students the opportunity to observe financial professionals in their day-to-day environment. This was followed by the chance to view and take photographs with the Premier League trophy, which was on display within the building – an unexpected treat that created lasting memories for the football enthusiasts among the group.
Before departing Barclays, each student received a goodie bag sponsored by CIS Security, distributed by the Worshipful Company team. Lunch consisted of pizza and chips, providing a welcome break before the afternoon activities.
The group then travelled to the Sky Garden at 20 Fenchurch Street. This verdant oasis high above the City offered spectacular 360-degree views of London and a moment of reflection amidst the busy schedule. Students wandered among the exotic plants, discussing their impressions of the day so far and the potential career paths they had been introduced to.
The next venue was Saddlers’ Hall in the Square Mile, where the City of London Police delivered an engaging presentation on careers in policing. A particular highlight was the opportunity for students to meet police horses and witness a demonstration of working police dogs in action. Many asked insightful questions about the selection and training processes for both animals and their handlers.
The day concluded with a journey aboard London’s famous black cabs, arranged by the Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers, which transported students to Bankside Pier.

From there, a Thames Clipper took them to Woolwich, offering yet another perspective of London’s landmarks, before the coach returned them safely to school.
The Whittington Course 2025 proved highly beneficial for all involved, providing students with a better understanding of the modern workplace and a broader perspective on the diverse range of available career paths. The impact of the day was powerfully captured in feedback from Carolyn Ellis of Harris Garrard Academy, who reported that students now see careers in banking and finance as more accessible following their visits to Northern Trust and Barclays. “Miss this feels more real, more accessible” was the direct feedback from students themselves. The inclusion of the Sky Garden tour proved particularly popular, while the black cab rides and Thames Clipper experience left lasting impressions. The Academy has even been inspired to create a ‘Whittington Alumni’ network to connect past participants and further enhance the experience for future cohorts.
The Worshipful Company of Security Professionals extends heartfelt thanks to all who made this year’s course possible: Northern Trust, Barclays, the management of Sky Garden and Saddlers’ Hall, the City of London Police, and the Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers and CIS Security for the provision of the goody bags for each participant. Special recognition must also go to Harris Garrard Academy for their continued partnership and to Carolyn Ellis for her tireless coordination.
