Apprentice & Apprentice Master’s Visit to Mansion House
On Monday 22nd of September, Apprentices and Apprentice Masters enjoyed a fantastic and timely visit to Mansion House. The experience was particularly special given that the current Lord Mayor, the Rt. Hon. Alastair King, is an Honorary Liveryman of our Company.
Our tour began in the Plate Room, home to hundreds of exquisite examples of gold and silver platework. Highlights included the original version of the Lord Mayor’s signature Collar of Esses, adorned with ornate roses and the letter ‘S’, donated by Sir John Aleyn, the Lord Mayor from 1535. We were also captivated by the highly decorative large silver drinking horn.
After this, we were taken upstairs, close to the administrative centre of Mansion House. As we ascended, we passed the stunning Harold Samuel Collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings. Among the artworks was The Merry Lute Player by Frans Hals, which drew particular admiration.
Upstairs, we explored the Palladian architecture of Mansion House, designed by George Dance the Elder. In the salon – originally a Roman-style courtyard, later converted into a salon to protect against the weather – we admired the intricate chandeliers, created by the Messrs Osler in the 19th century. The Egyptian Hall, where many of the Lord Mayor’s banquets are held, featured richly decorated Corinthian columns and statues inspired by characters from English poetry. Its stained glass windows depicted key moments in English history, including the sealing of the Magna Carta in 1215, and the dramatic scene of Wat Tyler, leader of the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt, being stabbed by then Lord Mayor, William Walworth.
Our final stop was the Nile Suite, named in honour of Sir Horatio Nelson’s victory in the Battle of the Nile (1798). This elegant room featured more examples of the Palladian style including ornate fireplaces, beautiful chandeliers, and additional works from the Harold Samuel collection.
Thank you to Simon for organising the visit, and to our very knowledgeable tour guide, Lindsay, for bringing the long history and grandeur of Mansion House to life.
