Dolly Carter works for the BBC’s investigations unit in the East of England. Prior to this, she was the crime correspondent for the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star. In 2023, Dolly was shortlisted for Young Regional Journalist of the Year at the Society of Editors’ Media Freedom Awards and shortlisted in the Local Journalism category at Press Gazette’s British Journalism Awards.

Dolly has been an Apprentice to the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals since late 2020. Her apprenticeship has afforded her the opportunity to take part in a range of exciting events, gain experience by managing the Company newsroom and she also received a personal invitation for luncheon with the current Lord Mayor of the City of London. Dolly will receive Freedom of the City of London upon completion of her apprenticeship in 2024.

I inrolled as an Apprentice in November 2016 while I was in my second year at King’s College London. Since then, I have been mentored by my Apprentice Master, Ray Williams, who has since then become a great friend of mine.

Since joining the Company, I have been active in attending many events, and have sat in both the Young Members’ Committee and the COVID-19 Working Group as the Apprentice representative. I have also advised on the organisation of the Whittington Course programme, and have written several articles for the Company website. These experiences have by far given me opportunities to plan events alongside some of the most senior members of the Company. I am grateful that the Company listens to young people’s thoughts and opinions in making key decisions.

After receiving my BA in International Relations, I received an MSc in Comparative Social Policy from Oxford, and has since then been working in the field of sustainability research in London. I received my Freedom recently in November 2020. My job requires me to look at multinational companies’ and their mitigation plans towards climate change and social issues, which means that I research potential physical, financial, market and operational risks of these companies. Being a member of the Company has therefore helped me in understanding security in multitude of ways, and I am able to apply them into my work. Outside of this all, I am a keen marathoner and an advanced scuba diver!
